Defense of Thesis

PhD Completion Checklist: Checklist

In accordance with the by-laws of the College of Graduate Studies, The Final Defense of Thesis Committee consists of the members of the student's Research Committee plus the CDB program Director and the Dean of JCGS. Students must receive written permission to write their thesis from their Research Committee. ‘Permission to Write’ is granted when all experimental work has been completed. Once permission to write has been granted, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange a date for their defense that is acceptable to all committee members, the Program Director and the JCGS Dean.

When a date it set, the Education Coordinator on behalf of the Program Director will send a notification of the thesis defense to the JCGS Dean. It is the student’s obligation to present all committee members, the Program Director and the JCGS Dean an unbound copy of their thesis at least two weeks prior to the scheduled defense.

Upon successful defense of the dissertation, the original bound dissertation, an additional bound copy, and one unbound copy are submitted to the office of the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies. If requested, the student should provide a thesis to each member of the committee.

In accordance with the policy of the College of Graduate Studies, in order for a student to graduate at June commencement exercises during any particular academic year, all requirements must be successfully completed by the deadline set by the College for that academic year.
