Rachel's South Africa Story
Traveling to South African with Dr. Roseann Schaaf was a privilege and an honor. I had the opportunity to visit two bustling metropoli, Cape Town and Johannesburg, as well as to experience a Safari in Pilanesburg. I accompanied Dr. Schaaf to the 16th Congress of the South African Association for Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions at the University of Cape Town. I listened to numerous health and medical professionals describe the effects mental health has on caregivers, family members, and the individuals with the diagnosis. An OT from Groote Schur Hospital was nice enough to give us a tour of the facility. |

There I learned that OT in South Africa was broken down into three separate divisions: neurological (TBI, CVA, psych), surgical (hands, orthotics, acute), and work assessment.
In Johannesburg we had the opportunity to visit a township where millions of South Africans live in shacks and terrible living conditions. At this township we spent some time with a Youth Group, whose aim is to keep teenagers from falling into bad habits and a preschool classroom with 90 kids in one room. I believe traveling to South Africa gave me a life experience that I will never forget. |
