Jefferson Medical College, through the Department of Anesthesiology, offers Pain Management Fellowship positions starting in July of each year. Four annual Fellowship positions are available and are open to national competition.

Accreditation

The Pain Management Fellowship at Jefferson Medical College is accredited for training by the ACGME.

Program Description

Our Pain Management program focuses on the multidisciplinary approach with close ties to physiatry, neurosurgery, psychiatry and psychology. The outpatient service is located at the Jefferson Pain Center. In the last academic year, our outpatient volume was 6000 patient visits and approximately 200 nerve blocks per month.

Our patient population commonly presents with a variety of disease processes including intervertebral disc disease, failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, post-herpetic neuralgia and other types of neuropathic pain. Our Fellows are closely integrated into our initial comprehensive patient evaluation as well as follow up visits. The pain service specializes in interventional pain management techniques under fluoroscopic guidance. The Fellow receives exposure and experience in the decision making process, performance and peri-procedure management of the following procedures and techniques many of which are done under fluoroscopic guidance:

  • Interlaminar epidural steroid injection
  • Selective transforaminal epidural steroid injections
  • Facet joint injections
  • Median branch nerve blocks
  • Cervical, thoracic, lumbar discography
  • Stellate ganglion blocks
  • Lumbar sympathetic ganglion blocks
  • Sacroiliac joint injections
  • Cryoneurolysis
  • Radiofrequency neurolysis
  • Brachial plexus catheter placements
  • Spinal cord stimulator trials
  • Intraspinal catheter trials
  • Permanent Du Pen epidural catheter implantation
  • Intraspinal catheter/pump implantation
