Copyright Policy

What is copyright?

A Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.

Objectives

The Copyright Policy covers ownership and distribution of copyrightable works created in the course of activities at the University.

The objectives of this Policy are:

• to enable the University to foster the free and creative expression and exchange of ideas;
• to preserve traditional University practices and privileges with respect to the publication of scholarly works;
• to establish principles and procedures for sharing income derived from copyrightable material produced at the University;
• to protect and develop the University's name and assets;
• to honor the copyrights and other intellectual property rights of other institutions, organizations, or firms that sell, share, or otherwise provide Thomas Jefferson University, its faculty, staff and students with materials used in the fulfillment of the University's mission.
