Course Description: 

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of biosafety as related to good laboratory practice. The course will begin with an introduction to Federal biosafety regulations, guidelines and standards, the role of the Biological Safety Officer in the institution and the epidemiology of laboratory-associated infections. Students will become familiar with: concepts in biotechnology and cell biology; means of exposure to bio-hazardous agents; hazard assessment in the laboratory; laboratory design criteria when using bio-hazardous agents; good laboratory practice, (GLP); decontamination, sterilization, disinfection and proper disposal of infectious waste; packaging and shipping of bio-hazardous material; biosafety training design and implementation; and special considerations related to gene therapy.
