Neuroanesthesia
The Department of Anesthesia at TJUH offers a one year Neuroanesthesia
fellowship with an option of a second research year, if desired.
The institution provides anesthesia for an adult neurosurgical
caseload of over 1500, including 400 craniotomies. TJUH is the
only spinal cord trauma center in Philadelphia. We offer comprehensive
training in all aspects of anesthesia for neurosurgery. The fellow
will be involved in formulation of anesthetic plans for patients
undergoing neurosurgical procedures, supervision and teaching of
residents, and presentation of a neuroanesthetic topic at faculty "grand
rounds". Research is strongly encouraged and office time will be
provided for pursuance of such endeavors. Electives are also offered
during which time the fellow may pursue related interests he/she
may have. Upon completion, the fellow w should be proficient in
fiberoptic intubations and in anesthetic techniques for special
situations like "awake craniotomies for epilepsy; spinal cord procedures
requiring intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring and intracranial
vascular surgery.
The field of Neuroanesthesia is rapidly growing. It is this department's
desire to prepare interested individuals for the unique opportunities
that are developing in divisions of neuroanesthesia of tertiary
healthcare facilities.
