Obstetric Anesthesia
Goals
- Develop confidence in the anesthetic management of the healthy
and complicated parturient.
- Develop the ability to design and complete clinical research
projects independently.
Faculty
- H. Jane Huffnagle,D.O. Director
- Suzanne Huffnagle,D.O.
- Vlad Grodecki, M.D.
- Pamela Atkinson, M.D.
Facilities
Thomas Jefferson Hospital provides obstetrical care to over 2400parturients
each year. Jefferson is a high-risk perinatal center with level
III nursery facilities. Special perinatal programs include those
designed to provide care and education for drug-addicted women,
paraplegic/quadriplegic parturients and fetuses with antenatally
diagnosed birth defects.
Clinical Responsibilities
The program begins with one month of intensive clinical experience
(including night call). Thereafter, fellows assume a primarily
supervisory role, instructing and guiding residents on the OB Anesthesia
service.
Throughout the year the fellow(s) will be on High Risk OB Call.
They will provide direct patient care, advice and guidance to CA
III residents for seriously ill parturients.
Research
Our Obstetrical Anesthesia group is actively involved in many
clinical research projects. Current areas of active interest include:
intrathecal opioids for labor analgesia, post dural puncture headache,
the effects of labor analgesia on obstetrical outcome and post
cesarean section analgesia.
Fellows are expected to actively participate in ongoing projects.
In addition, fellows will design and carry out their own research
projects with the support and guidance of our staff.
