Curriculum Overview
CA-1
During July of every year, CA-1 residents begin an intensive didactic program.
Half of each day is devoted to lectures that provide a knowledge base upon
which the residents can build during their training. The operating room exposure,
begun part-time in July changes to a full-time experience in August. For
the remainder of the year conferences are held three times a week. The lecture
format includes Grand Rounds, a journal club, problem based learning, and
a spectrum of topics covering basic sciences and clinical anesthesia. Separate
subspecialty lectures are also presented by the critical care, cardiac, obstetric
and chronic pain services. Guest lectures and specialty conferences are also
interspersed throughout the year. An extensive library and computerized learning
center are available to all. During the second and third year, each resident
receives funds to attend a national scientific meeting of interest. A stipend
is also provided for purchase of books, CD-ROMs and other educational material.
CA-2
The clinical format allows the resident to gain exposure to anesthesia for
all surgical subspecialties by spending a minimum of one month in each specialty
operating room during the first two years of training. The second year includes
two-month rotations in obstetric, pediatric, and cardiovascular anesthesia
as well as chronic pain management.
CA-3
In the CA-3 year, training is designed to fulfill the interests of the individual
resident according to the requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
This year may include research as well as emphasis in one or more anesthetic
subspecialties. With the exception of the pediatric anesthesia rotation,
all training is carried out at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
