Jay H. Herman, M.D.
Dr. Jay Herman has been a member of the Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research at Thomas Jefferson University since 2001. He serves as the Director of Transfusion Medicine for Thomas Jefferson Hospital and the Program Director for the fellowship program in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. He practices General Hematology in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Herman graduated from Harvard Medical School and trained in Pediatrics at Grady Memorial Hospital and the University of Virginia Medical Center. He received subspecialty training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking, and Adult Hematology.
From 1986 until 2001, Dr. Herman held hospital and faculty appointments in Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Pathology at a number of institutions in Philadelphia: the Penn-Jersey Regional Blood Center of the American Red Cross, Temple University Hospital and School of Medicine, and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Dr. Herman returned to patient care in 1999 as a clinical member of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Temple, serving as Medical Director of Stem Cell Processing and Collection.
Dr. Herman's research interests have been focused in the fields of platelet transfusion practice, pediatric transfusion, platelet and neutrophil immune disorders, blood stem cell collection and new apheresis technology. His clinical interests have focused on laboratory management, immunohematologic disorders and non-malignant hematologic diseases of children and adults, especially platelet disorders.
