Division Director

Residency

A primary mission of the Division of Cardiology is the training of leaders for academic cardiovascular medicine. In the clinical sphere, the division has responsibility for clinical and consultative cardiology, the coronary care units, cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, echocardiography, cardiac radionuclide and exercise studies.

Electives may be arranged during the residency programs for those wishing intense exposure in cardiovascular medicine. The teaching program has scheduled regular conferences in each of the subspecialty areas. Investigative opportunities are available in many areas. In molecular cardiology, researchers are studying ways to regulate the smooth muscle response to vascular wall injury. The division is pursuing clinical investigation of new approaches to coronary intervention. The catheterization program has established a core angiographic laboratory, which serves as a resource for several national trials of new interventions.

The electrophysiology area is active in new methods of catheter ablation of tachyarrhythmias, and the noninvasive laboratories are examining the clinical utility of new stress modalities.
