MD/MBA Program
Economic, organizational and political changes have dramatically changed the practice of medicine and transformed it into a large industry. Jefferson Medical College recognized the need to breed graduates prepared for leadership roles within the health care industry. A joint five year MD/MBA (and MHA) program exists for highly motivated students as a result of an educational partnership with Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, approximately 25 minutes from the Jefferson campus. The dual program is designed to prepare physician-managers who will operate in the interface between clinical practice and management. The physician-manager will be trained to make decisions while considering the effects on quality, access, cost- effectiveness and efficiency. Opportunities for research, administrative field placements and potential fellowship support exists to practice the disciplines learned through these programs. There is an increased imperative to balance quality, access and expenditures through joint-programs that teach both the clinical and managerial aspects of the field. In addition to developing management skills, the programs emphasize an understanding of the issues confronting the various sub-sectors of the health care industry. For more information on the MD/MBA program please contact David Nash by e-mail or 215-955-6969.

One option allows the student to attend the MBA program on a full-time basis between the second and third year of medical school. The second option suggests students attend the MBA program full-time after the completion of the fourth year of medical school.
