Pharm.D. Fellowship                                                                                                      Thomas Jefferson University ISPOR Student Chapter                                                         Greater Philadelphia Schweitzer Fellowship

PHARM.D. FELLOWSHIP IN OUTCOMES RESEARCH

In recent years, the interest in assessing health outcomes has increased due to advances in technology and changes in the delivery of healthcare. These factors have led to rising pressures to efficiently allocate healthcare resources. Skills required to measure the value of medical interventions and understand the development of healthcare policy are best acquired through experience and didactic training.

The Outcomes Research Fellowships offered by the Department of Health Policy at Thomas Jefferson University (DHP) provides this training. DHP's mission is to foster health policies that contribute to the delivery of high quality and cost-effective care by conducting research and educating healthcare providers, policy makers and consumers. The Department is one of the few academically based outcomes research centers nationally, and has achieved a reputation of quality and excellence. As consultants to academia and industry, DHP designs and conducts outcomes and health services research projects covering a broad array of clinical populations, care delivery settings, and research methods.

Each fellowship consists of two years of post-graduate training and is offered in partnership with corporate sponsors. Current fellowship sponsors include Ortho McNeil Janssen Scientific Affairs, LLC (a division of Johnson & Johnson) and ExcelleRx. Through the program, fellows learn to design, implement, and communicate the results of outcomes and health services research studies. Under the guidance of an experienced mentor, activities are tailored to fit the fellow's background and interests.

During the first year, fellows work at DHP, located in Center City Philadelphia. Their primary role is to serve as a member of the Research Group. Emphasis is also placed on didactic coursework, with fellows encouraged to take classes in epidemiology, biostatistics, research design, and health policy at appropriate Philadelphia universities (including Thomas Jefferson University, University of the Sciences of Philadelphia, and University of Pennsylvania). Fellows also have the opportunity to attend and present at DHP's research meetings, journal clubs, health policy forums, sponsored educational programs, and may contribute to any one of several graduate-level classes taught by DHP faculty for Jefferson's public health program. Fellows' writing skills are developed through completion of a writing seminar, peer-review of continuing education articles for P&T, and authorship of manuscripts for publications edited by DHP, including P&T, as well as Biotechnology Healthcare, American Journal of Medical Quality, Disease Management, and the Health Policy Newsletter.

During the second year, the fellow will work as a researcher within the Outcomes Research department at the sponsor's site. There, the fellow will be assigned projects in a variety of therapeutic areas and will learn how outcomes research is used to support products during pharmaceutical development and in the post-marketing phase.

A competitive stipend is provided, along with attractive benefits and tuition funds.
