Ambulatory Quality

Jefferson University Physicians (JUP) is the faculty practice plan associated with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Jefferson Medical College (JMC) comprised of 460 physicians.  JUP recognized the need to measure and improve the quality of outpatient care which led to the reconstitution of the Clinical Care Committee (CCC) in the fall of 2003.  This group was charged with overseeing the quality of ambulatory care.  The CCC seeks to create a JUP-wide quality culture and to stimulate performance measurement and improvement in all JUP clinical departments and divisions.  Neil Goldfarb acts as the Director of JUP Ambulatory Care Performance Improvement and guides his research staff in throughout these quality improvement initiatives.  Members of the Department of Health Policy provide healthcare quality expertise to the CCC and act as consultants to the clinical practices and departments as they implement their measurement and improvement efforts.  The CCC has a four-pronged approach to performance measurement and managment in the JUP outpatient practices:

  1. To develop and implement a plan for measuring at least one quality indicator in each clinical deparment, and to report on baseline measures.
  2. To develop and implement one quality improvement project spanning the large primary care clinical departments, incorporating nationally established measures of performance improvement.
  3. To work with selected clinical departments on development and implementation of performance improvement plans linked to the selected quality indicators, so as to begin to measure and demonstrate improvement.
  4. To begin developing an approach to patient safety improvement in the JUP outpatient practices.

The JUP CCC is chaired by David B. Nash, MD, MBA, The Dr. Raymond C. and Doris N. Grandon Professor of Medicine and Chairman, Department of Health Policy.  Members of the CCC include physician representatives from all clinical departments.
