The objective of the Future Docs High School Program is to provide high school juniors and seniors with information and resources that will guide and direct them while in college as pre-medical, graduate or health professions students.

Program Information

The Future Docs High School Program is a ten-week informational and experiential program for underrepresented minority and/or educationally/economically disadvantaged high school juniors and seniors interested in careers in the sciences. The program meets once a week for two hours at Jefferson Medical College. It is an after-school program; meets from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The program begins in January and ends in April. Students who complete the program and meet the necessary program requirements are awarded a Certificate of Participation.

Future Docs High SchoolProgram participants have the opportunity to explore careers in medicine, the health professions, or graduate biomedical sciences/research. They will interact with Jefferson physicians, faculty and medical school representatives. In addition, they will hear presentations on career opportunities and student life from our current medical, graduate, and health professions students. These sessions are designed to encourage students to prepare themselves adequately to pursue a career in medicine, the health professions, or graduate biomedical sciences/research. Topics include: medical ethics; diagnosing patients correctly; medical, graduate and health professions admissions requirements; financial aid and scholarship opportunities; careers in Nursing, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, ER Technicians, and allied health technologies; and, careers in Medicine (e.g. Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, etc.). Students are given hands-on experiences through the use of our Anatomy Lab and Clinical Skills Center. They will also have the opportunity to tour the hospital and TJU campus.

Selection Criteria

The Future Docs High School Program is designed to provide underrepresented minority and/or educationally/economically disadvantaged high school juniors and seniors with information and resources that will guide and direct them while in college as pre-medical or pre-health professions students.

Students selected for this program must be in good academic standing and demonstrate a strong interest or desire to pursue careers in medicine, the health professions, or graduate biomedical sciences/research
