Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Jefferson - Our Doctors

 

Marc I. Harwood, M.D.
Fellowship Director for the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Dr. Harwood attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. He received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine where he was an Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society member and received the William DeCherney, M.D. prize in 1997. Dr. Harwood served as a Resident and Chief Resident at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. Dr. Harwood has presented nationally and published in leading journals including the Journal of Family Practice. He currently serves as a Team Physician for the Philadelphia Phillies. He won the Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in 2005.


 

Rajwinder Deu, M.D.
Dr. Deu attended University of Maryland at College Park and graduated with a B.S. in Physiology and Neurobiology. He received his medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Deu served as a Resident and Chief Resident at University of Michigan Department of Family Medicine. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. He currently sees non-operative orthopaedic patients in the Family Medicine clinic.


 

Peter C. Vitanzo, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Vitanzo attended Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine where he was an Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society member. Dr. Vitanzo served as a Resident and Chief Resident at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and in Sports Medicine. Dr. Vitanzo serves as a Team Physician for the Philadelphia Phillies and he also provides medical coverage for such mass events as the Philadelphia Distance Run and the Philadelphia Marathon.

 

Michael G. Ciccotti M.D.
Dr. Michael G. Ciccotti, Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at the Rothman Institute, is nationally recognized for his work in sports medicine.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude from both the College of the Holy Cross and Georgetown University Medical School. He then completed Orthopaedic Residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and was awarded a fellowship in sports medicine at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Sports Clinic in Los Angeles, CA. While there, he served as team physician assistant for all the Los Angeles Professional Sports Teams and the University of Southern California Athletic Program. He then returned to the Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University where he now serves as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Jefferson Medical College, Co-Director of the Orthopaedic Residency Program and the 1998 President of the Jefferson Orthopaedic Society.

He has served as an orthopaedic consultant for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, the Philadelphia Flyers Hockey Team and the Philadelphia Eagles Football team. He is currently the Team Physician for the Philadelphia Phillies Baseball Team, St. Joseph's University, the Philadelphia Marathon, and the Philadelphia Distance Run. Dr. Ciccotti has published numerous papers on the treatment of sports injuries, authored in leading texts on the knee, shoulder and elbow, and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally on the full spectrum of sports medicine.


Robert W. Frederick M.D.
A New York City native, Dr. Frederick joined the Rothman Institute after serving as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, where he was Team Physician for all sports and Director of the Sports Medicine program since 1993. Dr Frederick received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and obtained his orthopaedic residency training at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University. Following his residency he then completed a one-year fellowship in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Frederick has held numerous other professional appointments in sports medicine and has provided medical and orthopaedic care at major athletic events in the Atlanta area. During the Summer Olympic games in Atlanta, he served as Director of Athlete Care for Gymnastics and presently remains an orthopaedic consultant for the U.S. Women’s' Gymnastics Team, and attended the 2006 Summer Olympics in Athens. He is Board Certified, is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and was an active participant in several medical and orthopaedic societies in the Atlanta area. Dr. Frederick has published and presented numerous times on his clinical and research interests including articular and meniscal cartilage transplantation.


Christopher J. Mehallo, D.O.
Dr. Mehallo comes to the Rothman Institute from Riddle Sports Medicine in Media, PA. He currently serves as a consultant to several Delaware County high schools and is the sports medicine physician for Cheyney University, Neumann College, and Penn State Delaware County.

Dr. Mehallo is currently on the editorial board for the Osteopathic Family Physician News for sports medicine topics, is chairman of the American osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine Research and Publication committee, and actively reviews articles for the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine.

Dr. Mehallo graduated from Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA in 1992, receiving a B.S. in Biology. He later received his Doctor of Osteopathy in 1996 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Osteopathic Rotating internship and Family Medicine residency at Meridia South Pointe Hospital in Cleveland, OH. He then completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Horizon Orthopedic/Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Mehallo specializes in non-operative sports medicine. He sees patients at the Rothman Institute’s newest office in Media, PA.


Bruce Hopper, M.D.
Dr. Hopper is a non-surgical sports medicine physician. He is a published physician who serves as team physician to several local sports teams including the Philadelphia Phillies. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and received the E. Harold Hinman Memorial Prize in Family Medicine. Dr. Hopper completed his residency and sports medicine fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Hopper sees patients at the Rothman Institute offices in Center City, King of Prussia, PA and Voorhees, NJ.
