Hospital Service
The Department of Family and Community Medicine is responsible for one of the busiest clinical service at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Inpatient census averages 14 patients per day. Patients are admitted to pediatrics, medicine and the step-down ICU, and present an impressive range of diagnostic entities. The Family and Community Medicine hospital team is comprised of a third-year resident, a second-year resident and two interns as well as a member of the full-time faculty. Two hours, everyday, are devoted to teaching rounds. In addition to input by the full-time faculty member rotating on the service, the department’s clinical pharmacist also participates during in-patient rounds. Since the department established its own inpatient service in 1985, it has grown rapidly. This past year, Jefferson Family Medicine Associates admitted more than 800 patients to their service and rendered over 300 consultations. This large number of consultations from other services to Family and Community Medicine is evidence of the respect given to the clinical expertise and competence of the department.
