Thomas Jefferson University/Jefferson Health System

Thomas Jefferson University is a major academic health center that includes the second largest private medical school in the country, as well as schools for nursing, allied health and graduate studies. Over the years, Jefferson has achieved a reputation for outstanding patient care and has achieved excellence in its research and educational endeavors. These achievements have led to major advances in all branches of medicine.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a 622-bed institution with major programs for heart disease, cancer, high-risk childbirth, genetics, orthopaedics and liver transplants. It is one of only a few hospitals in the United States that is both a Level I Regional Trauma Center and a federally recognized Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center. Jefferson provides outstanding care through its nineteen departments of clinical specialties and more than 1,000 staff physicians.

The hospital houses 12 specialty intensive care units, including a surgical ICU and intermediate surgical ICU, a surgical coronary care unit and a step-down unit, a neurosurgical ICU, a pediatric ICU and a large intensive care nursery.

Jefferson is also committed to creating an integrated healthcare network of high-quality services with other area hospitals which cover a large geographic region. Integrated delivery networks of all types care for patients, including home care, hospice care, acute hospital and nursing home stays. Such systems improve the efficiencies and effectiveness of the delivery of health care.

Housing

Jefferson owns and manages two apartment buildings - the Barringer and Orlowitz residences. These buildings offer comfortable apartments, ranging in size from efficiencies to three bedrooms, to accommodate different budgets and living preferences. In addition, the Martin Building offers affordable, dormitory-style living.

If you prefer to live off campus, there are many alternatives. The immediate neighborhood surrounding Jefferson offers everything from quaint town houses to modern high rises. Campus and Community

The 13-acre campus of Thomas Jefferson University is located in the heart of Center City, Philadelphia. Most of its academic, administrative and patient-care facilities are clustered within an eight block radius. Jefferson's immediate neighborhood offers much to explore. To the east is one of the most historical miles in America, home to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and many other buildings, parts and museums of national historical significance. Also east of the campus is Penn's Landing - a popular waterfront area that showcases the city's history as a working port along the Delaware River. A few blocks south of campus is South Street, a vibrant district of shops, restaurants and night spots. Philadelphia's famous Italian Market on South Ninth Street is also nearby.

A few blocks to the north or west is Philadelphia's own Chinatown and always-popular Reading Terminal Market, where you can find fresh produce and exotic foods from around the world. Theaters and music halls are all within easy walking distance. A variety of organizations use the nearby Philadelphia Convention Center to meet and conduct activities. No matter which direction you choose, you can find fun, interesting and valuable activities near campus.
