Richard C. Wender, MD
Chairman, Department of Family Medicine
Beginning with his residency in Family Medicine in 1979, Dr. Wender has
spent his entire career at Jefferson. He directed the Family Practice
residency here from 1985 to 1995 at which time he was named Vice Chair of
the Department and Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine at JMC.
Dr. Wender is best known for his work in cancer prevention and screening.
He is co-author of several of the American Cancer Society's screening
guidelines and has worked with the Centers for Disease Control, Cancer
Research Foundation Of America, and the National Colorectal Cancer
Roundtable to develop ways to reach more Americans with preventive
services. He is past president of both the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania
Divisions of the American Cancer Society, (ACS), and is currently one of
seven at-large members of the National Board of Directors of ACS. Dr.
Wender currently chairs that organization's Cancer Control Committee. Dr.
Wender also has a clinical focus in diabetes and has coordinated a large
number of diabetes educational initiatives for primary care clinicians.
Noted for his humor and entertainment skills, Dr. Wender believes in the
positive impact of humor in the healing process. Admired and well
respected by students, colleagues and patients, in 1999 Dr. Wender served
as Class Day Speaker at JMC and, in 1997, he was the Parents Day Speaker. More recently, in 2000, he was honored by the Pennsylvania Division of the
American Cancer Society with the Order of the Sword of Hope. In 1996, the
Philadelphia Division of the Cancer Society presented him with their
National Division Award.
Dr. Wender received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of
Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
