Plaque Prevention: Farber Institute Launches Anti-Amyloid Clinical Trials
The Farber Institute for Neurosciences is pursuing three clinical trials of investigational "plaque-busting" drugs, the first in a new generation of therapies targeting the beta amyloid protein. Sticky plaques comprised of beta amyloid accumulate in the Alzheimer's brain and damage nerve cells.
"These trials represent the first rigorous studies of drugs aimed directly at the underlying cause of Alzheimer's," says leading clinical researcher, Barry Rovner, M.D. "It marks the beginning of a new era in the treatment of amyloidogenic diseases, of which Alzheimer's is the most prominent target."
