Residency

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology provides a full range of clinical services, research and teaching programs in which students, residents and fellows participate. These include outpatient and inpatient consultation in digestive diseases and nutrition by full-time faculty members.

The staff conducts a wide variety of endoscopic, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. These include routine upper and lower endoscopy, dilation of strictures, sclerosis of varices, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with papillotomy and stent placement, polypectomy, electrocoagulation of bleeding lesions, laser therapy for the treatment of obstruction malignant tumors and endoscopic placement of esophageal stents, percutaneous liver biopsy, endoscopic ultrasound, esophageal and anorectal manometry, gastric analysis and testing of pancreatic, small intestinal and hepatic function and 24 hour ph monitoring. The division participates in an active liver transplantation program and is involved in both the preoperative screening and postoperative management of liver transplant patients. The division also participates in the nutritional support program.

The formal teaching program of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology includes weekly digestive disease rounds, a journal club, research conference, pathology conference and clinicopathological conferences.

Residents may rotate in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. During this rotation, they perform inpatient consultation that are reviewed with an attending physician and participate in the evaluation of outpatients with a broad range of gastrointestinal diseases.

Residents may elect to do intensive clinical work in hepatology and participate in the management of patients on the liver transplantation service.

Participation in research projects is encouraged.
