JEFFERSON HEADACHE CENTER RESEARCH

WE ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLING SEVERAL RESEARCH STUDIES FOR THE ACUTE AND PREVENTIVE TREATMENT OF MIGRAINE.

ACTIVELY ENROLLING STUDIES (updated October 2008)

Inhaler

MAP: Inhaled acute migraine medication study

Treat one attack at-home study

You may qualify if:

  • You have 2 to 8 migraine attacks per month, and at least 20 headache-free days per month
  • You do not have any significant cardiac history
  • You are generally in good health and able to attend periodic visits to our center

 

Headache and pills

Episodic Migraine study for patients who have used FIORICET, FIORINAL or ESGIC

Treat three attacks at-home

You may qualify if:

  • You have 2 to 8 migraine attacks per month, and less than 15 total headache days per month
  • If you take headache preventives, they are stable for 4 weeks
  • You have taken Fioricet, Fiorinal or Esgic (or generic equivalents) in the past

 

Skull

Episodic Migraine study using Carbon Dioxide during mild pain

Treat one attack at home

You may qualify if:

  • You have 2 to 8 migraine attacks per month, and less than 15 total headache days per month
  • If your headaches typically start as mild pain
  • If you take headache preventives, they are stable for 12 weeks

 

Botox Vial

BOTOX for people who do not get complete relief from triptans

7 month study; 5 study visits; 2 free rounds of Botox

You may qualify if:

  • You have less than 15 total headache days per month and you have not received Botox in last year
  • You are not currently taking headache preventives (check with your provider)
  • You have a history of not having complete relief from triptans or require multiple doses of triptans

 

Cymbalta

CYMBALTA for the prevention of episodic migraine

4 month study; 5 study visits; 3 months daily dosing Cymbalta

You may qualify if:

  • You have episodic migraine attacks 4-10 times per month and you have less than 15 total headache days per month and
  • Your current headache preventive medications are stable
  • You have not failed greater than 3 adequate trials of headache prevention

 

PFO

PFO Closure study

PFO is a hole in the wall that divides the top right and left chambers of the heart.  Research has shown a higher prevalence of PFO among patients with migraine.

You may qualify if:

  • You have high frequency episodic migraine (6 or more migraine days per month and less than 15 total headache days per month)
  • Headache preventives are stable for 4 weeks and you have not used Botox within the last 4 months
  • You do not overuse your acute headache medications AND you do not have a history of stroke or TIA

 

 

FROVA

FROVA for the treatment of Fasting induced migraine

Treat one attack at-home study

You may qualify if:

  • You have 1-6 migraine attacks per month and less than 15 total headache days per month
  • You have hunger or fasting as a trigger for your migraine attacks and you can  complete one 20-hr fast
  • If you take headache preventives, they are stable for 4 weeks

 

 

Patch

Episodic Migraine study using a Transdermal Patch

Treat one attack at home

You may qualify if:

  • You have 1 to 6 migraine attacks per month and less than 15 headache days per month
  • If you take headache preventives, they are stable for 12 weeks
  • You have not failed Imitrex or are unable to tolerate Imitrex

 

Preventive Headache Studies

Preventive trials are clinical trials that test a medication for its ability to prevent or decrease the frequency, duration, and disability of migraines.

Preventive headache studies are currently being conducted at the Jefferson Headache Center . Men and women ages 18 to 65 who experience frequent migraine headaches may be able to participate in a clinical research study. The study is designed to examine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in the prevention of migraine headaches. Physical and neurologic examinations, as well as study drug, will be provided at no cost to qualified participants. Compensation for travel and related expenses will be provided.

Acute Headache Studies

Acute trials are clinical trials that test a medication for its ability to relieve head pain at the onset of a migraine.

Acute headache studies are currently being conducted at the Jefferson Headache Center . Men and women ages 18 to 65 who experience migraine headaches may be able to participate in a clinical research study. The study is designed to examine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in the relief of eligible migraine attacks. Physical and neurologic examinations, as well as study drug, will be provided at no cost to qualified participants. Compensation for travel and related expenses will be provided.

 

Cluster Headache Studies

A severe headache that affects predominantly men. Attacks are briefer and more frequent than migraine, are strictly one-sided, and usually occur in clusters that last for weeks. For more information on cluster headache visit the Organization for Understanding Cluster Headaches (O.U.C.H.), a non-profit organization formed to assist cluster headache sufferers and their families.

Cluster headache research is currently being conducted at the Jefferson Headache Center . We have a number of trials open for enrollment at any one time. If you are a cluster headache sufferer of any race and gender between the ages of 18 and 65, either in or out of headache cycle, you may be a candidate for one of our studies.
