Expertise and Research Interests
|
Since 1980, my focus has been data processing techniques to augment decision processes in medicine. With established clinical knowledge, applications can be written for clinical support. Clinical applications can be linked to form clinical systems. Specific problems to solve are:
1. Do decision support programs increase the effectiveness of physicians?
2. Can computing systems substitute for memorization in medical education?
3. Can protocol generators save time while maintaining quality clinical care?
4. Can mathematical formalisms clarify answers to unclear clinical decisions?
5. Can computer systems provide a milieu of the efficient management of patient data?
6. Can expert systems elevate apprentice physicians to near-expert cognition through the use of such a program?
7. Can systems be designed for high ergonomics and mobility?
Since 1980, most of these problems have been the core of clinical computing research, or clinical informatics, and isolated solutions have been achieved. Applications have commercial potential. My current approach to these problems is through open software 0r equivalent GNU license applications executed through an environment of net neutrality.
Dr. Gozum is Assistant Professor of Medicine and founded Clinical Informatics at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Gozum received his B.S. from Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines, with honors on his senior year. Dr. Gozum received his M.D. from Fatima College of Medicine, Philippines, where he was awarded the Deans Foundation Scholarship, and graduated Certificate of Distinction at the top 10% of his class. He has strongly advocated for automation and computing systems since 1978. He is a voting member of the Institute of Electronic Engineers, Association for the Advancement of Science, and the IEEE Computer Society. He was an elected Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is an active clinician-teacher at the medical school and the Internal Medicine residency training program. He frequently lectures on automation topics throughout the United States when not pursuing his passion for technical & cave SCUBA diving.
Dr. Gozum's core interest is epistemology demonstrated by pragmatic research in a medical domain. From abstract education research to efficiency in medical services, Dr. Gozum's eclectic achievements include co-authorship of Gonnella's Disease Staging criteria, founding authorship of the University's World Wide Web standards, planning University information technology growth and governance; planning Hospital policies for confidentiality, security and use of electronic resources; proposing technical, staff and user requirements for a University information technology infrastructure; proposing University workstation, server, and networking, email and calendaring standards; and planning a Hospital wide electronic medical record. His other works include activities with medical boards, city and Federal agencies, journal peer review and collaboration with industry.

Other Expertise
|
|
I have deep interest in Diving Medicine primarily in field treatments of SCUBA diving injuries, diver health and extending human endurance underwater. I am a regional referral physician for the Divers Alert Network, a member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, and National Speleological Society, Cave Diving Section. Primary Care Diving Medicine was founded in 2001 to emphasize the clinical focus of my practice towards diving related issues and not the breadth expected of hyperbaric medicine.

Industrial Relevance
|
|
Growth of information systems within health care will necessitate the continued interfacing of human health providers with automation.
Diving medicine has relevance not only to recreational divers, but to anyone exposed to a hypobaric or hyperbaric milieu, be it space travel to deep subterrestrial work.
