Getting a Social Security Number
You will need a social security card or proof that you have applied for one (a receipt from the social security office) before you can be put on payroll. You also need to provide the Office of International Exchange Services with the number once you receive it.
You must go to the Social Security Office at 1234 Market Street, Philadelphia,
to apply for your social security number (SSN).
You will need to bring your passport and I-94 Card. You also will need to bring the following documents:
- F-1 (can only apply with a job offer): Form I-20, proof of full-time registration, employment offer letter with salary and number of hours, and a letter from OIES stating that you are in valid F-1 status with Jefferson. See http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10181.pdf
- J-1 Scholar/J-1 Student : Form DS-2019; if you do not receive funding from Jefferson, you also must bring a letter from OIES stating that you are in valid J-1 status with Jefferson.
- J-2 with Work Permission: Form DS-2019 and your valid EAD card
- H-1B Employee: Form I-797

You may be able to call this number two to three days after you have applied to request your Social Security Number. As soon as you have your social security number, please contact OIES and your department.
