Thomas Jefferson University held the investiture of its fourth president, Robert L. Barchi, M.D., Ph.D, on Tuesday, October 5 at 10:30 a.m., at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, 260 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia. A reception followed in the Kimmel Center from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
The presidential investiture gave the Jefferson community an opportunity to celebrate its new president. The installation of a new president is a ceremony of dignity with many academic traditions and protocols. An academic procession takes place that includes delegates from other colleges and universities, as well as Jefferson's own faculty. Marchers wear the colorful academic regalia of their own institution. Interspersed with musical selections, there were greetings from a representative of the faculty, alumni, students, staff and government officials.
Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., president of the Association of American Medical Colleges, was the keynote speaker.
Rosemarie Greco,
Director of the Office of Health Care Reform,
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, offered greetings to Dr. Barchi from Governor Edward Rendell.
The actual investiture involves the presentation of the university charter and presidential badge to Dr. Barchi from the chairman of the board. It was followed by the president's inaugural address.
