Expertise and Research Interests
|
Expertise: Design, production, maintenance, analysis and cryopreservation of transgenic mice; mouse genetics.
Research Interests: Cryopreservation of mouse sperm is a potentially valuable method for archiving valuable strains of mice. It not only provides insurance against loss of the strain, but also frees resources being, since a strain could be maintained from the freezer and retrieved only when needed rather than as a live colony that must be continually bred. The utility of this approach, however, is burdened by the fact that sperm from many inbred strains, and C57BL/6 in particular, do not survive cryopreservation. The ability of sperm from inbred strains of mice to survive cryopreservation is regulated by an as-yet unidentified series of genes. The focus of my research is to identify these genes as a prelude to understanding the biological causes of this phenomenon and also identify potential solutions. It also has broader implications in the medical and agricultural fields, since individual sperm donors, whether human or animal, will often produce semen samples that do not survive cryopreservation.
