The Jefferson Postdoctoral Association and the Jefferson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) Office of Postdoctoral Affairs will host the 6th Annual Jefferson Postdoctoral Symposium (PRS)
on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. The keynote address will be in the Connelly Auditorium in the Hamilton Building (1001 Locust Street) and the poster presentations will be in the Hamilton
lobby. The PRS will display the multiplicity of research done by Jefferson postdocs.

The Symposium Agenda is available.

All abstracts will be presented as posters. The poster session will again include the “Early Discoveries” category. The “Early Discoveries” category is for postdocs who have been at Jefferson for less than one year or who have started a new project in the past year. This
category will be judged separately. Prizes will be given for the best poster presentations in
all sessions.

Sharon Milgram
The keynote speaker is Dr. Sharon Milgram, a senior investigator at the NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and adjunct investigator at the National Human Genome Research Institute. The central focus of her research is the study of cell signaling and protein trafficking in polarized cells. Dr. Milgram is also the Director of the Office of Intramural Training and Education.

Dr. Milgram received a BS degree in Physical Therapy from Temple University in 1984 and a PhD in Cell Biology from Emory University in 1991. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University before joining the faculty at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994. At UNC Dr. Milgram rose to the rank of Full Professor with Tenure in the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology. Her research was supported by grants from the NIH, NSF, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and American Heart Association.
Dr. Milgram held a number of administrative positions at UNC including the Associate Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program, Director of the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, and the Director of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience. She founded and advised the UNC Office of Postdoctoral Services and served on the advisory committee of the Signal Xi National Postdoc Survey. Dr. Milgram served as Principle Investigator on a number of training grants including an NSF REU grant, and NIH grants to support predoctoral students in cell & molecular biology as well as an Initiative to Maximize Student Diversity. In 2007 Dr. Milgram joined the NIH Office of the Director as the Director of the Office of Intramural Training and Education. There she directs a trans-NIH Office dedicated to the career advancement of over 5000 trainees, ranging from college students to postdoctoral and clinical fellows. Dr. Milgram is also a Senior Investigator in the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and an Adjunct Investigator in the National Human Genome Research Institute.

The Distinguished Mentor Award will be presented immediately following the keynote address.

All are invited to view posters, attend the talks, and meet the postdoc presenters throughout
the day. There will be an award ceremony and reception following the poster session.
