Sample Biosketch

Name: Cynthia Miller

Institution: University of Nebraska

Degrees: B.S. in Occupational Therapy, Advanced Masters in Occupational Therapy with concentration in community health

Position: Assistant Professor

Significant Accomplishments in Community Health

Ms. Miller has spent the past 12 years providing occupational therapy services to the frail elderly in adult day care centers in southern Nebraska. During this time she has organized health screening activities, exercise programs, and home safety evaluations for individuals participating in the centers. Her emphasis in these programs is to help individuals learn the skills necessary to allow them to live independent lives. This proposed program is an outgrowth of these activities.

Ms. Miller also teaches in the occupational therapy program at the University of Nebraska . Her teaching responsibilities include courses in Population Based Occupations: Health and Wellness, Community Health and Older Adults and Their Living Environments. She regularly involves students in field work experiences in the day care centers.

During summers, Ms. Miller has implemented a summer camp for children with disabilities, providing recreational exploration activities. She has taught courses in independent living skills, health promotion and computer literacy to adults in a community setting. Over the course of her career she has worked in a variety of other settings such as transitional housing centers and migrant worker camps.

“Developing a Home Modification Program for Frail Elderly Living Independently.” American Occupational Therapy Association Annual Meeting.

“Evaluating the Safety of Your Home.” Presentation to participants at Mountain Park Adult Day Care Center.

“To Exercise or Not to Exercise: When to Know When.” Presentation to residents of Harry P. Jones Independent Living Facility.

“Developing a Home Exercise Program for Frail Elderly Living at Home.” Presentation to the Nebraska Occupational Therapy Association Annual Meeting.
