Welcome to the Center for Faculty Development

Jefferson's Center for Faculty Development (CFD) was established in 1994 and offers a wide variety of activities and services designed to enhance the academic environment within higher education. By providing a wide range of professional development activities and promoting the active dissemination of instructional knowledge, the Center supports the University's mission by enhancing the quality of teaching and learning and the ability of faculty to thrive as instructors, scholars and professionals.

The mission of the Center for Faculty Development is to provide leadership and support for a community of emerging and established scholars while fostering an academic environment conducive to teaching, learning and scholarship. Center goals are:

  • Improvement of teaching
  • Professional growth of faculty
  • Enhancement of the academic climate

New faculty orientation, forums, seminars and workshops constitute regular programming activities of the Center. Individual services include the Center Associates, classroom videotaping, individual consultation, peer observation and mentoring, syllabus/test preparation and review, and preparation of teaching evaluation forms.

The Center also provides consultation and expertise in curriculum development and evaluation as well as student outcomes assessment. In cooperation with the Learning Resource Center and AISR, the Center works with faculty to incorporate computer and other technologies into curricular design and evaluation. To encourage and support faculty research and scholarship, including funding, the Center offers programs and consultations in collaboration with the Center for Collaborative Research. In support of faculty development in all areas-teaching and learning, curriculum development and evaluation, student outcomes assessment, research and scholarship, and application of technology-the Center maintains a library of books and journals for faculty use and reference.

While the Center for Faculty Development is organizationally located within the Jefferson Schools, its programs, services and publications are available free to the University community. The Center develops off-campus programs to meet the specific needs of institutions of higher education in the United States and abroad. The Center is located in 1610 Edison Building, 130 South 9th street, Philadelphia, PA 19107-5233. Phone: (215) 503-4158.
