Janice Burke, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy and Dean of the School of Health Professions, has been honored with the Eleanor Clark Slagle Lectureship. This award, the highest honor presented by the American Occupational Therapy Association, is to recognize a member of AOTA who has " creatively contributed to the development of the body of knowledge of the profession through research, education, and/or clinical practice" (AOTA). Dr. Burke will present her Slagle Lectureship at the Annual AOTA Conference in Orlando, Florida, in 2010.

Roseann Schaaf, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, has been funded for a research grant to study to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families to "achieve their full potential for healthy and productive lives” (U.S. Dept. of Health, Intra-agency Autism Coordinating Committee). The project will characterize sensory dysfunction (SD) in children with ASD in comparison to controls on behavioral AND physiological measures and determine the impact of SD on adaptive behaviors and participation in home, school and community activities.  This project builds on Dr. Schaaf's pilot work and is the first step in a larger program of research that will develop and test intervention strategies to decrease SD based on the findings from the study.
