Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD)
OTD Student Varleisha Gibbs

Where did you complete your previous degree(s)?
I received my B.A., in psychology, from the University of Delaware.
I completed my Masters of Science, in OT from Columbia University
How has the transition into the OTD program been for you?
It has been extremely supportive and easy. I was made to feel part of a team of highly qualified and personable professionals. You have an advisor, as well as a peer "buddy", which is extremely helpful.
How did you decide on the OTD at Jefferson over other programs?
I know that Jefferson is a highly reputable institution. After looking at the program, I appreciated the courses offered, and how they related to my growth as an OT. The flexibility allowed me to continue working and being a mother and wife!
What kinds of clinical work and professional activities have you involved in while at Jefferson and previously?
I am the president of a therapy agency, providing services in schools and the clinic setting. While at Jefferson, I have been gaining knowledge on leadership and evidence-based practice. This has allowed me to improve, my therapy agency by implementing new policies relating to those areas. I have discovered that my participation, in the program, can benefit my peers and staff. Sharing of current research, best evidence, and current trends, encourages my colleagues to provide quality care. In addition, being offered a TA position at Jefferson is giving me the experience I need, for a possible career in becoming an instructor of OT.
What are you working on now, to develop your plan for your OTD Fellowship and Capstone?
I am now establishing the need for my project. This involves actual patient and therapist surveys. In addition, I am studying current evidence, and theories, relating to my Capstone. This research is leading me to becoming an expert in my areas of interest. Despite my experiences, and previous education in OT, I believe I have become more knowledgeable, about my field, than ever!
Overall, what do you think the OTD degree contributes to the occupational therapy field?
The OTD program at Jefferson, leads therapists to becoming the best in their field. With a strong faculty, supportive environment, and a great peer environment, OTs can successfully complete their doctorate in occupational therapy. The program allows you to continue your life while becoming fully immersed in the program. The program directly focuses on the mission of AOTA and the Centennial Vision. Therapists, completing the program, will be experts in their field and change agents for the profession of OT.
