OTD banner 2

curriculum overview

The clinical doctorate in occupational therapy (OTD) is a post-professional degree that provides you with advanced skills and knowledge to enhance your current practice and prepares you to be an innovator in traditional and emerging areas of occupational therapy. You will also have the opportunity to develop or refine your academic and clinical teaching skills.

The OTD is designed for busy professionals.

  • Choose to take classes part-time or full-time
  • Take as many classes as you want each semester

All required OTD classes are online; with on-campus meetings 1-2x per semester on a weekend day. However students who are unable to attend in person have the option to attend these on-campus meetings virtually.

  • Minimum of 33 credits depending on experience and whether it is completed full- or part-time

12 months and one semester full-time (varies if part-time)

Summary: Program Length

The OTD requires a minimum of 33 credits. The exact number of credits depends on your experience and whether you take the program full or part time.

  • Students with less than 3 years experience take a 6-credit fellowship
  • Students with more than 3 years experience take a 3-credit fellowship.
  • Students take an OTD seminar each semester they are enrolled. Therefore, students enrolled longer will have more OTD seminar credits.

Example: OT with 3 years experience and a Masters degree

  • Full-time student: six semesters of study.
  • Part-time student: variable, depending on
    • length of time you are in the program
    • number of courses you take per semester (1 or 2)
    • whether you have continuous enrollment (i.e., if you take a semester off, that will lengthen your time in the program).
