Master of Science in Bioscience Technologies

The Master of Science in Bioscience Technologies (MSLS) Program prepares students in the laboratory fields of Biotechnology/Molecular Biology, Cytotechnology and Medical Technology who will:

  • Make lasting contributions to health sciences and healthcare through clinical laboratory leadership and research exploration
  • Address critical management, quality assurance, operational, financial and research study issues in clinical or research laboratories
  • Participate in collaborative educational and research opportunities with faculty, students and laboratory practitioners.

About the Master Of Science Program
Clinical and research laboratories develop and utilize increasingly sophisticated technical and information systems to provide accurate and reliable diagnostic and therapeutic products. At the same time, the healthcare climate in which laboratories provide these services necessitates meticulous attention to the integrity of the research process, and to quality assurance including patient outcomes of laboratory testing, regulatory compliance, and human and financial resources management. The laboratory industry seeks individuals who possess these value-added skills in addition to their exceptional technological skills for clinical and research laboratory practice and management.

Entry-Level BSLS/MSLS Program
The entry-level MSLS Program is designed for students who have not yet received a Bachelors Degree but have completed a minimum of 82 semester credits, including 36 credits in biological and chemical sciences. This MSLS program enables students to qualify for admission to graduate laboratory sciences education at Thomas Jefferson University through a combined BSLS/MSLS program that begins each Fall Semester. Students progress through a seamless integrated curriculum. At the conclusion of the program, the BSLS and MSLS degrees are awarded by Thomas Jefferson University.

The Department is also developing affiliation agreements with a number of colleges and universities that will allow students to earn their BS degree from their original school and their MSLS degree from Thomas Jefferson University. Our current affiliations include Penn State Abington and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Admission Requirements for the Entry-Level BS/MSLS Masters Program

  1. Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a science professor)

  2. Cumulative GPA of at least 2.80 (on a 4.0 scale) for all undergraduate courses, with a 3.00 in science courses.

  3. Personal statement

  5. International Students must obtain an evaluation of foreign transcripts by the World Education Service (WES) or comparable agency

  6. A personal interview, when requested

Curriculum: Entry-Level BS/MSLS Masters Program

The entry-level Master of Science in Bioscience Technologies Program is a 2-year, full-time sequence, including a summer term. The first year of the MSLS sequence consists of predominantly undergraduate coursework in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology or Medical Technology. Students who achieve a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher at the completion of two semesters of undergraduate coursework are admitted to the graduate phase of the program. In the graduate phase of the program, students complete required basic science, research, practicum and elective coursework. Students will also complete coursework in a selected concentration area of Management & Supervision; Financial Management; Research Skills; or Regulatory & Quality Management. View the Entry-level BSLS/MSLS Program Curriculum.

Applicants to the entry-level degree program will complete the standard College of Health Professions admissions application. Additional information about the BSLS/MSLS admissions process, including transfer course distribution requirements, may be obtained by contacting:
