JSHP Dean Janice Burke Named Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lecturer

Janice P. Burke, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA

Janice P. Burke, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, dean, Jefferson School of Health Professions and chair and professor in the department of occupational therapy, was chosen to receive the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award at the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Annual Conference & Expo in Houston, Texas. She accepted the honor at the Annual Awards and Recognitions Ceremony on April 25.

The citation on the award reads: Inspiring Occupation: Leadership in Practice Education and Scholarship. The Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award is an academic honor established as a memorial to Eleanor Clarke Slagle, one of the outstanding pioneers in the profession of occupational therapy. The purpose is to honor a member of AOTA who has creatively contributed to the development of the profession’s body of knowledge through research, education and clinical practice.

The lectureship is the highest academic honor that AOTA bestows. Dr. Burke will deliver the lecture at the 2010 American Occupational Therapy Association Annual Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida. Her presentation will focus on verbal and nonverbal communication in the context of occupational therapy.

“I am extremely honored to receive this award and to be recognized by colleagues in occupational therapy,” says Dr. Burke. “I look forward to the opportunity to speak in this national forum.”
