CARAH and Fox Rehabilitation Win Special Merit Award for Improving the Lives of Families

Mimi Jacobs, PT, GCS, PCS, Fox Rehabilitation and Tracey Vause Earland, MS, OTR/L, CARAH, received an award from Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, an ardent advocate for caregivers, at the RCI Awards Gala on October 22, 2009.

PHILADELPHIA – November 19, 2009 – Tracey Vause-Earland, MS, OTR/L, clinical project director of translational research activities at the Jefferson Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health, Thomas Jefferson University, and Mimi Jacobs, PT, GCS, PCS, executive director of the Geriatric Education & Research Institute at Fox Rehabilitation, accepted the Rosalynn Carter Leadership in Caregiving Award on behalf of their organizations at the RCI Awards Gala on October 22 for Dr. Gitlin and her team’s caregiver intervention, the Environmental Skill-building Program.

"We are honored to receive this merit award from the Rosalynn Carter Institute. This award will support our continued effort to implement the Environmental Skill-building Program in practice settings for families caring for individuals with dementia," says Vause-Earland.

The special merit award recognizes the success of implementing the Environmental Skill-building Program in Fox Rehabilitation which provides house calls to older adults. The collaboration between CARAH and Fox Rehabilitation reflects best practices in providing effective caregiver supports. The organizations’ work in translating Dr. Laura Gitlin’s Environmental Skills-Building Program from the randomized trial setting into a third-party reimbursement environment ensures long-term sustainability in caregiver support for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. It is a breakthrough in the care of families and helps usher in a new approach to caring for individuals with dementia.
