Jefferson School of Pharmacy Students Visit the State Capitol

PHILADELPHIA – April 21, 2010 – On March 24, a group of JSP students and faculty traveled to Harrisburg to demonstrate how pharmacists can save healthcare dollars and improve public health outcomes.

Jefferson students, along with their colleagues from the other six schools of pharmacy in Pennsylvania, provided state legislators, legislative staffers and other capitol workers with blood pressure screenings and information on topics ranging from medication reviews and immunization awareness to smoking cessation and diabetes management.

In the afternoon, participants met individually with legislators and staffers to discuss important issues of the profession, including the need for providing fair audits, preserving the patient’s freedom of choice, collaborative care, and expanding the scope of practice, to name a few.

"Our students’ participation in these legislative events is important to building their understanding of the legislative process and how it affects our profession as well as the care we offer patients," said Rebecca Finley, PharmD, MS, FASHP, dean, Jefferson School of Pharmacy.
