Sanoski, Jefferson School of Pharmacy Chair, Named AACP Leadership Fellow and ACCP Treasurer

Cynthia Sanoski

Cynthia Sanoski, PharmD, Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Jefferson School of Pharmacy, has been selected to participate in a leadership program of one national pharmacy association and was elected to serve as Treasurer of another national group.

Dr. Sanoski is part of the 2009-2010 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leadership Fellows Program. The AACP designed this intensive leadership program to develop the nation’s most promising pharmacy faculty for roles as future leaders in academic pharmacy. The program's goal is important for a future in which many deans of pharmacy schools are expected to retire and the number of pharmacy schools continues to grow.

"Throughout the program we will talk about different leadership skills, and I would like to further enhance these skills as I work toward my long-term goal of being a Dean at a school of pharmacy," says Dr. Sanoski. "One skill on which I’d like to particularly focus is conflict resolution."

To participate in the program, candidates must be nominated and supported by their school Dean. The application includes a 1,000-word essay that describes leadership or management experiences, future career goals, assessment of strengths and areas needing improvement, expectations of the program and how the individual would like to make a difference in academic pharmacy and higher education.

The program begins in August at a weeklong retreat where fellows are grouped based on leadership strengths. Each group will interact throughout the year focusing mainly on a research project which they will present at the AACP Annual Meeting in 2010.

Dr. Sanoski asked Rebecca Finley, PharmD, Dean of the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, to be her mentor for the program. "By working with Dr. Finley I will have a chance to observe school governance that I would normally not be involved in. This is a valuable benefit and will give me some great experience."

As Dr. Sanoski progresses through the leadership program, she will also be learning the ropes in her new role as Treasurer of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). She was elected to a three-year term of office that begins in October. "This is a great honor for me," she says. "As Treasurer, I will also be on the Board of Regents, which is the governing body of AACP." Dr. Sanoski was named a Fellow of ACCP in Fall 2007.

Her duties as treasurer of this national organization include serving as the custodian of all AACP funds, monitoring monetary investments and delivering the annual financial statement to the organization.
