Endowment

One of Jefferson's top priorities is to increase endowed support for student financial aid, faculty, and programs. A university endowment is a Rock of Gibraltar that can weather the storms of an uncertain economy. The principal is held in perpetuity. Only the earnings are spent, primarily on those priorities deemed critical to the mission of the university.

Many additions to the Jefferson endowment come in the form of bequests-funds left to Jefferson by friends and alumni under the provisions of their wills. Other additions to the endowment are made by living donors. Donors often make an endowment gift that will support, in an ongoing way, something in which they are particularly interested-a chairmanship or professorship, scholarships for deserving students, or the library.

The endowment provides a permanent financial foundation for Jefferson. Managed well, it provides a dependable source of income to fund operations. It gives stability and strength to Jefferson. The bigger the endowment-the stronger is the academic reputation of the university. For this reason the market value of the endowment is often used as an index to the quality and staying power of the institution. Those who rank universities and assess institutions for the purpose of making grants look at the endowment as a measure of fiscal integrity.
