Mercy Hospice
Mercy Hospice is a recovery house for women and their children, offering a comprehensive array of residential and professional social services to its residents. The services offered to the residents include the provision of food, clothes, shelter, life skills, parenting education program, and goal-oriented case management. In addition, Mercy Hospice provides daily hospitality to woman on the street, in other shelters, or in near homeless situations. Services provided to women include daily lunch, access to showers, clothing, telephone use, and socials services assistance from a case manager.
In the 1970's women who were without permanent housing became more visible in the streets and abandoned buildings of Philadelphia. At this time, Catholic Social Services asked the Sisters of Mercy for their assistance in opening a shelter for women and in 1976 the first shelter, Mercy Hospice, was opened. Mercy Hospice has the capacity for 37 adult women and 13 children.
The JeffHOPE clinic at Mercy Hospice provides general adult and pediatric care to the residents of this shelter. We provide health maintenance visits, sick visits, blood sugar checks, adult immunizations, diabetes education, nutrition and exercise classes, and smoking cessation counseling. Approximately 6-10 patients (women and children) are seen at the clinic on the first Wednesday of every month. In the space in which we run clinic, we have an exam room which allows for us to perform short procedures, address patients’ gynecologic concerns, and give patients the privacy they desire.
