Jeff IT Office 2010
Jeff IT will be deploying all new Windows 7 computers with the Office 2010 Professional 32bit suite. The Office 2010 Professional suite contains the following programs. Please click on the appropriate program link to learn more about each product.
Because the Office 2010 release has several characteristics that are different from prior versions, the following should be considered:
In earlier versions of Microsoft Word, files were saved with the .doc extension. Microsoft Office Word 2010 files now use the .docx file extension. Excel workbooks have exchanged their .xls file ending for new .xlsx extension in Excel 2010. Presentations in PowerPoint have long been saved with a .ppt ending whereas, now, in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010, the file extension is .pptx.
Just a reminder: this dramatic change to file formats is much more than just a cosmetic switch in file naming conventions, and so, editing the extension will not convert a file from one type to another.
EASY TIP: How can you tell the difference between Office 2010 and Office 2003 files? View your files from Windows Explorer. The file is an Office 2007/2010 file format if it has a 4-character extension (xlsx, pptx, docx); it is an Office 2003/2002 (or earlier) file format if it has a 3-character extension (xls, ppt, doc).
Microsoft Office Access 2010 databases are also saved with a new file format, .accdb, or can be created with the same file format as earlier versions, .mdb, to allow for continued easy access to data. Once an Access database is converted for use with Access 2010, however, it is no longer available for use with earlier versions of Microsoft Access. Notice as well that Access 2007 databases are saved with a 5-character extension (accdb).
All files with .MDE extensions (Access Executable files) are incompatible with Office 2010 and will need to be dealt with by locating the source code and converting to ACCDE. ACCDE is the file extension for Office Access 2010 files that are in “execute only” mode. ACCDE files have all Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) source code removed. A user of an ACCDE file can only execute VBA code, not modify it. This procedure is not supported by Jeff IT.
MS Access 2010 does not allow data access pages to be created, modified or imported. Microsoft recommends leaving MS Access applications containing data access pages in the existing version of Access.
In Office 2003 and earlier, Word had the ability to store multiple versions of a document within one file. Starting with Office 2007, Word no longer supports this feature.
