==================== JeffNEWS, April 1995 ==================== Two Women Featured at Jefferson Art Exhibit ------------------------------------------- Photographer Jeannie Pearce, wife of neonatologist Eric Gibson, MD, instructor of pediatrics, and graphic artist, Deborah R. Yoder, mother of Suzanne M. Yoder, JMC '97, will be the featured artists at the 1995 Jefferson Art Exhibit. "Artistic expression enriches all our lives," said art committee chair, Elaine Spitzer, "whether you are fortunate enough to be able to create a work of art or have the ability to appreciate someone else's efforts. We urge you, exhibitors and `appreciators' alike, to join us at this year's show." The exhibit starts Thursday, May 4, with the opening reception for artists and their families, and continues through Wednesday, May 17, on the mezzanine balcony of Jefferson Alumni Hall. Hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. Jeffersonians and members of their families, including their children, are encouraged to enter their work. A special section will be set aside to showcase the youngsters' talents. Every type of artistic expression is welcome: pastel, oil, watercolor, graphics, woodcarving, sculpture, needlework of all kinds, weaving, stained glass and photography. You may enter as many as two pieces in each category. Painting and photographs must be wired for hanging, and works for sale should have the artist's phone number on the entry form. To reserve your space in the show, please complete the registration form you'll receive in interoffice mail, or find at building information desks and outside the events services office at M-32 Jefferson Alumni Hall. You may also call Mrs. Spitzer at 610-449-5051 or Faculty Wives Club president Jill Braid at 610-664-2902 to have a registration form sent to you. The 1995 Featured Artists ------------------------- Jeannie Pearce Since she was a teenager, Jeannie Pearce was captivated by "the magic of photography." Her fascination with the subject led her to the Rochester Institute of Technology, graduate school at University of Delaware and at the Tyler School of Art. "At this point in my career, I depict surreal landscapes," Ms. Pearce said. "I'm influenced by my surroundings and by art history, and aim to expand the imagination and convey the mind's capacity for fantasy." Each completed work is a composite of from four to 10 photographs. She has an expanding library of negatives and slides, taken with regular color film, which she uses to create her images. "I have these written onto a CD-ROM disk so I can recompose and alter them on my computer," she explained. Ms. Pearce is an adjunct associate professor in the media arts department at the University of the Arts, where she teaches photography and digital imaging. Deborah R. Yoder To Deborah R. Yoder, graphic art is a way of combining art and design to make ideas clearer for people. "What I like to do is organize things so people can easily read and understand them," Ms. Yoder said. Although she's been drawing since she was a youngster, she majored in psychology in college. "After graduation, when I taught emotionally disturbed children, I used art to reach them," she said. Among her many and quite diverse projects, Ms. Yoder has produced a program, "Big Kids and Babies," a nationally marketed sibling-education program for hospitals that included a coloring book and slideshow. She is one of the few nonprofessionals ever to design a float for the Tournament of Roses Rose Parade (1986); is advisor to the newspaper at Strath Haven High School, and is working with a Virginia cookie company on their new packaging. At the Jefferson Art Exhibit, you may see some of Ms. Yoder's T-shirt designs, posters, calligraphy, an illustrated nursery rhyme and made-to-order guardian angels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
