======================== JeffNEWS, August 1, 1995 ======================== NewsBRIEFS EMPLOYEE TRANSFERS RISING ------------------------- One of the primary goals of the human resources department is to help talented employees with expanded levels of skill take advantage of challenging new opportunities within the University whenever they arise. "We want to see employees who have made the extra effort to acquire additional education and skills be able to capitalize on them for their own benefit, as well as Jefferson's," said Linda C. Mitchell, manager, employee selection and placement. One example of such an effort is completing the secretarial certificate program. Rose Boccia, coordinator of employee orientation and career counseling, is available to help employees determine types of new opportunities available in their present area of expertise or to point out a new direction for their careers. The assistance Ms. Boccia provides takes the form of self-evaluation, career assessment and discussions about career alternatives, as well as brown-bag lunch forums, sponsored by human resources development. This year, more than 400 employees have been transferred into positions that involve a change in their career paths or promotion to positions of greater responsibility. This figure represents an increase of more than 60 percent over prior years. Some examples of career changes or promotions include: o Administrative assistant to customer service representative o Transportation aide to clerk-typist o Accountant to grants manager o Project coordinator to health educator o Medical technologist to clinical laboratory supervisor o Medical secretary to administrative assistant "We consider the discovery and accommodation of our employees' growth potential one of our most important responsibilities and successful achievements," Ms. Mitchell said.
