====================== JeffNEWS, July 1, 1995 ====================== In Memoriam Mary Godfrey, RN, 1886 - 1995 ----------------------------- Pioneering nurse, Mary Godfrey, died May 28. She was the oldest living member of Jefferson's Diploma Nurses Alumni Association and in 1994 the oldest living woman veteran, according to the Veterans Administration. After her 1909 graduation from Jefferson, Mrs. Godfrey joined the newly formed Navy Nurse Corps, serving in this country and the Philippines. She later became the first Chief Nurse ever assigned to a ship of war. Mrs. Godfrey was a private-duty nurse at Jefferson from 1946 until 1968. Sodeman Sr., MD -------------------------- Internationally recognized medical educator, William A. Sodeman Sr., MD, ScD, LHD, the 19th dean of Jefferson Medical College, died Saturday, June 10. Dr. Sodeman's career at Jefferson began in 1957 as chairman of the department of medicine. In 1958, he was chosen dean, serving until 1967. During Dr. Sodeman's tenure, women medical students were first admitted, research was encouraged and increased, and JMC alumni became eligible for membership on the Board of Trustees.
