====================== JeffNEWS, July 1, 1995 ====================== More than 700 Attend Hand Foundation Symposium and Workshop ----------------------------------------------------------- Robert M. McFarlane, MD, FRSCS, of Ontario, Canada, and Col. (ret.) John W. Moore, OT, of Seattle, were the honored senior professors at the 20th annual symposium and workshop, Surgery and Rehabilitation of the Hand - '95, sponsored by the Hand Rehabilitation Foundation and Jefferson Medical College (JMC). Dr. McFarlane is emeritus professor of surgery and former chairman of the division of plastic surgery at the University of Western Ontario, and Col. Moore is the retired chief of occupational therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Each year, the Hand Rehabilitation Foundation funds the attendance at the symposium of a hand surgeon or hand therapist from a developing country so that the newest concepts in the field can be introduced into these lands. This year's recipient was Janine Hareau, PT, OTR, the only occupational and hand therapist in Uruguay. "This has been for me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. . . .I have to be able to awaken in others the desire to study and go more deeply into this field," Ms. Hareau said. Course chairmen were Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, JMC, James M. Hunter, MD, president of the Philadelphia Hand Center and of the Hand Rehabilitation Foundation; Lawrence H. Schneider, MD, clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery, JMC, and executive director of the division of hand surgery, and Evelyn J. Mackin, PT, director of the Hand Rehabilitation Foundation. The workshop coordinator was Patricia M. Byron, MA, OTR/L, CHT, clinical director of hand therapy at the Philadelphia Hand Center. University president Paul C. Brucker, MD, was on hand at the opening session to welcome the participants, who numbered more than 700 surgeons and therapists from almost every state, as well as Canada, Brazil, England, Finland, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Ukraine and Uruguay. The event featured 52 presentations along with 22 concurrent workshops and panels by a 56-member faculty who correlated the concepts, indications, surgical techniques and pre- and postoperative care of the injured and disabled arm and hand.
