Mandle, PhD, Jefferson Professor Emeritus of Microbiology and Immunology, Dies at Age 75 --------------------------------------------------- Robert J. Mandle, PhD, earned his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and was appointed assistant professor of microbiology at Jefferson Medical College in 1951, where he remained until retirement in 1986 as professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology. Dr. Mandle was considered an excellent teacher, inspiring both medical and graduate students. The Jefferson Medical College graduating class of 1984 honored Dr. Mandle by presenting his portrait to the institution. In 1979, he received the Lindback Award for excellence in teaching. His students, who will carry forth his message of work ethics, learning and compassion well into the 21st century, are his legacy. Dr. Mandle died on Wednesday, April 5, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Molly, his four children, Henry, Robert, Paula and Max, seven grandchildren and legions of students and friends.
