====================== JeffNEWS, June 1, 1995 ==================== PeopleNotes o Andrew D. A. Maidment, PhD, assistant professor of radiology and director of radiological imaging physics, received the first prize of the Young Investigators Symposium Award of the International Union of Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM). This award is presented every three years to an outstanding young scientist in the fields of biomedical engineering or medical physics. Dr. Maidment's paper entitled "Prototype Clinical Imaging System for Digital Mammography" and presented in Rio de Janeiro, described work being performed at Jefferson and the University of Toronto in the development of a digital mammography imaging system that can image the entire breast. This is the first time a digital imaging system has had the capability to compete successfully with film- screen mammography. Clinical trials of the technique will begin here later this year. Dr. Maidment's co-authors include Stephen A. Feig, MD, professor of radiology and director of the Breast Imaging Center, and researchers in the laboratory of Martin J. Yaffe, PhD, at the University of Toronto. o Harvey J. Schwartz, MD, clinical professor of psychiatry and human behavior, Jefferson Medical College, has edited a new textbook, "Psychodynamic Concepts in General Psychiatry." Dr. Schwartz was the director of residency education for 10 years at Jefferson and is a member of the Philadelphia Association for Psychoanalysis. He is the editor of three other psychiatric textbooks including one on the intensive treatment of patients with bulimia, a subject he updates in the current book. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
