==================== JeffNEWS, May 1 1995 ==================== NewsBRIEFS JEFFERSON CONTRACT WITH MICROSOFT TO NET BIG DOLLAR SAVINGS IN SOFTWARE LICENSE FEES ----------------------------------------------------------- A contract agreement between Jefferson and the Microsoft Corporation will yield significant dollar savings through deep discounts on software products. The agreement, known as Microsoft Select, offers many benefits, says Maureen Owens, assistant director, department of information systems (DIS). The agreement permits you to: o Upgrade to the latest version of the software product you now use. o Obtain a licensed version of software you may have "borrowed" from a colleague, thus illegally infringing on copyright law. o Obtain more programs for your software dollar. For example, Microsoft Word, now sold in the traditional off-the- shelf version at Computer Prescriptions for $92.50 can be bought through Microsoft Select for $25 for each licensed version. "This represents quite a savings for the University's 4,000 on- campus computer users," says Ms. Owens. "Microsoft Select is the closest thing to having a site license with Microsoft," she adds. "It is a great opportunity for departments to save the University money in software license fees." For your department to upgrade existing software or obtain new products, you must prepare a Request to Purchase (RTP) and include the serial number of any software you want to upgrade. While on-line tutorials and help screens are built into software applications licensed under Microsoft Select, the programs do not come with complete manuals. However, alternatives to complete manuals are available at Computer Prescriptions. For more information about the Microsoft Select program, call Computer Prescriptions at 8099.
