===================== JeffNEWS, May 1, 1995 ===================== Jefferson's Scott Library Expands JEFFLINE to Pennsylvania Hospital ------------------------------------------------------------------- An agreement between Jefferson and Pennsylvania Hospital now makes JEFFLINE available to the more than 4,500 employees of Pennsylvania Hospital, including the 834 members of its medical staff and 180 residents. The agreement means a significant step that benefits both institutions, says Edward W. Tawyea, University librarian and director of academic information services and research. "With the flick of a switch, the agreement permits Pennsylvania Hospital to move from a traditional print library and immediately plunge into the new world of electronic library and clinical support information," explains Mr. Tawyea. "At the same time, Jefferson benefits from an enhanced teaching environment for Jefferson residents and students who train at Pennsylvania Hospital," he adds. "Linking the two institutions electronically helps create a common culture and information system that benefits both institutions." The contractual agreement provides Pennsylvania Hospital staff and employees access to all resources of Scott Library D borrowing books and using Jefferson's microcomputer labs, instructional technology and videos. In addition, they have electronic access to: o JEFFLINE, including MEDLINE, and to all drug and poison control data bases and other clinical resources o the Internet via the statewide network o information about Jefferson, including the campuswide information system (CWIS), information about CME courses and about the office of research information o a wide variety of specific files about TJU, as well as files to be created specifically for Pennsylvania Hospital. o educational software such as heart sounds, slide images, etc. The arrangement provides revenue to Jefferson, in exchange for the services, Mr. Tawyea adds. The agreement was reached following discussions that began last spring with Joseph S. Gonnella, MD, senior vice president for academic affairs and dean, JMC; Joseph F. Rodgers, associate dean, residency and affiliated hospital programs, JMC; Timothy Brigham, PhD, assistant dean for graduate and continuing medical education, JMC; and, from Pennsylvania Hospital, Mike Magee, MD, senior vice president, academic, community and provider affairs; Polly McGreevy, director, academic affairs; and Patricia Wilson, manager, library services. Speaking for Pennsylvania Hospital, Dr. Magee says: "This agreement demonstrates what can be done when our organizations focus on common positive goals. Our collaborative work in graduate medical education, undergraduate medical education and continuing medical education now has a single informational foundation which points us toward a common future." Mr. Tawyea points out the agreement represents a significant addition to an already growing list of JEFFLINE users. "JEFFLINE already extends through Delaware because of a similar contractual agreement with the A.I. duPont Institute. In addition to all the current Jefferson users, we have student and employee users at 10 other Jefferson affiliates," he says. "This adds up to a growing common information system of probably 20,000 potential JEFFLINE users. It means that wherever our students and residents rotate they will be finding the same information related to clinical care and educational programs. This growth is creating a virtual electronic campus." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
