Sigma Xi Student Research Day Entries "Outstanding"
---------------------------------------------------
"We had many more outstanding presentations than prizes," was how
Thomas M. Butler, PhD, professor of physiology, Jefferson Medical
College (JMC) and president of the Jefferson chapter of Sigma Xi, the
national research society, described the caliber of the posters
submitted for this year's Student Research Day.
 
Jointly organized by Jefferson Sigma Xi and the College of Graduate
Studies (CGS), Student Research Day this year had more than 40 poster
presentations by 50 students in Jefferson Medical College (JMC) and
the College of Graduate Studies (CGS), as well as area universities
and colleges.
 
The event was organized by Dr. Butler, E. Marshall Goldberg, MD,
professor of medicine, JMC, and Eric B. Kmiec, PhD, associate
professor of pharmacology, JMC. They were assisted by CGS staff.
 
Student Research Day is held in conjunction with the William Potter
Lecture, which memorializes Mr. Potter, who was elected to Jefferson's
Board in 1894, became president in 1897 and served in that capacity
until his death in 1926.
 
This year's Potter Lecturer was William A. Blattner, MD, chief of
the viral epidemiology branch of the National Cancer Institute. Dr.
Blattner's topic was "Chronic Viral Diseases: The Retroviral
Paradigm." He, too, commented on the quality of the student posters,
calling the students wonderful teachers. "I learned a lot from their
work."
 
Jonathan E. Gottlieb, MD, applauded Dr. Blattner's lecture saying,
"He gave us a brilliant description of how one can use the tools of
medical genetics to address issues of the health of our communities."
Dr. Gottlieb, chairman of the 1995 Potter Lecture Committee, is
associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor of
medicine/pulmonary and critical care medicine, JMC.
 
After the lecture, the following students were awarded prizes for
their research:
 
The W. Potter Wear Medical Student Research prizes were awarded by
W. Potter Wear's son and William Potter's grandson, Joseph Wear, to
Jennifer Hopp, Nidhi Kumar and Mark Lund, all JMC '97.
 
Awards in the graduate student category were presented to Betsy
Hazel, PhD candidate in biochemistry and molecular biology, CGS;
Sharon Lee, PhD candidate in immunology, CGS; Joseph Marini, PhD
candidate in immunology, CGS; Ganesh Raj, a Gibbon Scholar in genetics
in the combined MD/PhD program, CGS, JMC '97; and Naibo Yang, PhD
candidate in physiology, CGS.
 
Clare Zeberkiewicz, Ursinus College, received the undergraduate
research prize.
 
Also on this occasion, the William W. Bodine Award for tenacity and
dedication to research was presented to Peter Symington, JMC '96.
