========================= JeffNEWS, October 5, 1994 ========================= CGS Hosts High-School Student Visit ----------------------------------- For the second year, the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) hosted a campus visit for 40 gifted high school students participating in the Young Scholars Summer Program at Villanova University. The program, sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Science Foundation, encourages and prepares students to pursue careers in science and mathematics. The group was welcomed by Jussi J. Saukkonen, MD, dean of the College of Graduate Studies, who gave the students an overview of the University and its academic programs. The visitors were hosted by Georganne K. Buescher, EdD, associate dean, CGS, and Jessie F. Pervall, CGS admissions coordinator, who at the end of the day, along with Edward B. Christian, PhD, assistant dean for student affairs and special programs at Jefferson Medical College, spoke about the career options and benefits of a graduate science education, as well as practical considerations and concerns. While on campus, the students toured the Jefferson facilities with CGS student hosts, heard formal presentations by faculty members and visited the labs of various Jefferson researchers. Joseph R. Sherwin, PhD, professor of physiology, associate dean, CGS, and associate dean of scientific affairs, Jefferson Medical College, presented a lecture on "Medical Ethics and Research," a topic of special interest to student and staff attendees. Again this year, Hie-Won Y. Hann, MD, professor of medicine and director of the Liver Disease Prevention Center, shared highlights of her research studies on the effects of an iron-rich diet on cancer cell growth. During their visits to the labs of other faculty members, students appreciated the lure of science by seeing firsthand some of the many research projects under way at Jefferson. The lab visits were hosted by Rocky S. Tuan, PhD, professor of orthopaedic surgery and professor of biochemistry and microbiology; Thomas M. Butler, PhD, professor of physiology; Laurence C. Eisenlohr, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology; Joan M. Overhauser, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and microbiology; W. Edward Mercer, PhD, associate professor of microbiology and immunology; and Na'eem Abdullah, PhD, postdoctoral fellow in the division of infectious diseases. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information provided by: Editor, JeffNEWS (215) 955-6204 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
