========================= JeffNEWS, October 5, 1994 ========================= Jefferson, Lend a Hand: Support United Way... 1994 United Way Campaign - October 6 to 28 ---------------------------------------------- These days, people want to be sure when they lend a hand through a charitable contribution that the money will actually help those it was intended to help and that it will be spent wisely. "When you lend your hand to deserving citizens in our community through United Way, you can be sure the money reaches the people you want to help. That's because United Way spends only 11.8 percent on administrative costs, which is among the lowest in the country," said 1994 United Way cabinet chairman, Cheryl Haze Luehrs, assistant dean and administrator of the Faculty Clinical Practice Plan, Jefferson Medical College." You can also be sure that the agencies will spend your money wisely," said Ms. Luehrs, reappointed United Way cabinet chairman for a second year by University president Paul C. Brucker, MD. "That's because more than 300 volunteers from the five-county region monitor the performance of member agencies that receive United Way funds. "Remember, lending a hand to your fellow citizens through the United Way campaign strengthens our own community and makes it a better place to live," Ms. Luehrs said. Jefferson's campaign kicks off Wednesday, October 5, when the United Way cabinet hosts campaigners for lunch at 11:30 in Jefferson Alumni Hall, first floor. The program will include remarks by Dr. Brucker; an appearance by Christine James-Brown, the new president of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a guest speaker and a showing of the 1994 United Way film. At that time, also, campaigners will be able to pick up their packet of campaign materials or can arrange for colleagues to pick the packet up for them. Packets remaining after the luncheon will be hand-delivered. The Universitywide campaign kicks off Thursday, October 6, and ends Friday, October 28, giving us three weeks to reach our goal of $267,500. During that time, Jefferson also hopes to increase employee participation. When your department's campaigner asks about your contribution, why not arrange to make it through payroll deduction? You can designate as little as 50 cents per pay - $12 per year -making it easier for you to lend a hand. Employees who wish to make anonymous contributions may hand-deliver them to 529 Scott, care of Robert Widmann, associate controller. It's Your Choice ---------------- You can choose any of three different ways to make your contribution: o Community Care gifts support United Way partner and member organizations that help address four fundamental goals: nurturing children and youth, promoting life-long health and independence, building skills for self-sufficiency, and building community supports or families o Targeted Care gifts support individual United Way agencies that focus on health and human services for specific areas of need. Among them are the African American, Asian, Latino, and Women's Services funds; risk funds for children and youth, the elderly and families; and funds for health and rehabilitation and the hungry and homeless. o Specific Care gifts can be directed to specific United Way member or nonmember agencies of your choice, such as the Black United Fund of Pennsylvania, Women's Way, and the Catholic or Jewish federations. This year, it's much easier for you to make a specific care gift because this option is printed right on your pledge form. If you have any questions about United Way, ask your campaigner or call the United Way Hotline at 5566. Consider Jefferson for A Specific Care Donation ----------------------------------------------- Patient care is one of Jefferson's principal missions. You can see your United Way dollars at work for our patients if you designate your contribution to our hospital. To designate your gift to Jefferson, insert the amount of your gift on your pledge form, as well as Jefferson's name and code number 00116. A Message from Dr. Brucker -------------------------- Traditionally, Jeffersonians have been very generous in supporting many worthy causes, but that generosity is truly remarkable when it comes to the annual United Way campaign. For 14 consecutive years, we have led our Delaware Valley peers in the amount of funds raised for the drive. I hope that you will keep that tradition going, and, by doing so, lend a hand to the more than 1.5 million people in our region who deserve your help. Paul C.
